Laboma Beach Business Development Manager, Nii Lante Bruce, says management did not receive an official letter notifying them of the planned demolition of structures at the facility.

He said the only notice management received was the marking placed on the affected buildings after the Greater Accra Regional Minister and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) visited the area.

Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Nii Lante Bruce said the authorities indicated on the buildings that they were to be removed and gave a 21-day period for compliance.

“They came here, the Regional Minister came here with REGSEC, and then they wrote on the buildings that these buildings have to be removed. That’s the notice we got,” he said.

According to Mr Bruce, management was not provided with formal documentation setting out the details of the demolition decision.

He said while the markings indicated what government intended to do, they did not address the technical, legal and human concerns arising from the decision.

“Government intends to do, it does not by itself answer every technical or legal human question arising from that decision,” he said.

Mr Bruce said the affected parties subsequently sought engagement with government during the 21-day period.

He said management raised concerns, commissioned technical work, requested individual assessments and petitioned President John Dramani Mahama.

“These were not attempts to prevent environmental protection,” he said.

Rather, he explained that the engagements were aimed at ensuring that what he described as an irreversible action was properly justified before being carried out.

Mr Bruce stressed that management is not against any environmental interventions or efforts to address flooding, but wants decisions affecting businesses and livelihoods to be supported by proper technical and scientific assessment.
