Private legal practitioner, Kwame Jantuah, has called for a comprehensive rehabilitation of the Lands Commission to tackle persistent challenges in the sale and management of government lands.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Mr. Jantuah said some of the land problems originate from within the Commission itself.
“Lands Commission itself needs a whole rehabilitation because sometimes some of these things start from the Lands Commission,” he stated.
He pointed to past committee findings on land matters, noting that many recommendations were never fully implemented, contributing to recurring disputes.
Using the Achimota land controversy as an example, he highlighted how lands are sometimes sold by parties without the legal right to do so.
“Do you know how many times in Accra here lands have been sold and sometimes they don’t have the right to sell the land because the land isn’t theirs?” he asked.
Mr. Jantuah observed that encroachment appears better controlled in the Ashanti Region, where Otumfuo Osei Tutu II exercises authority over lands in Kumasi. He also criticised the politicisation of land administration, noting that political appointees often feel entitled to control or allocate lands.
He recommended a full catalogue of state lands, specifying which should be retained, which returned to original owners, and the purpose for each.
“Catalog all those lands. Name what those lands were supposed to be used for. Those that are going to go back should go back. Those that are going to be used should be stated what they are going to be used for,” he said.
Mr. Jantuah added that about 8,160 lands have already been identified under the current exercise but stressed that further work is needed to ensure transparency and accountability in land management.
