Child online protection and digital literacy advocacy organisation, J Initiative, is pushing for subjects which will develop Digital Citizenship in children to be inculcated in basic school syllabus.
Digital citizenship is the nurturing of persons who will be conscious about accepted and unaccepted online practices. The aim is to promote Safer Internet practices.
As part of measures to push the Digital Citizenship agenda, J Initiative trained some Junior High School teachers on some of the basic ways to sensitise students on appropriate online practice.
“We have to train the children to know what is good and bad on the internet. Many of them are naïve in the cities how much more those in the rural areas. They may be engaged in things that will jeopardize their future or open them up to certain unscrupulous persons in our society,” the Executive Director of J Initiative, Awo Aidam Amenyah said.
She added: “Not only the students, but parents must be aware of the dangers on the net and keep a keen eye on what the children do and teach them about the dos and don’ts on the internet.”
Some of the teachers shared their experiences with the students and received counsel on ways to deal with some of the issues.
The session which was held in the Volta Regional capital Ho was part of events to mark the 2018 Safer Internet Day which was celebrated on February 6.
