President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Africa’s demand for reparative justice has moved from silence to global assertiveness, describing it as “a unified demand” rooted in historical truth and moral clarity.
Delivering remarks at the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting between the African Union and Regional Economic Communities in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, President Mahama called for a renewed continental commitment to correcting the injustices of the past.
“Africa’s call for reparative justice is no longer a whisper,” he said. “It is a unified demand, grounded in historical truth, moral clarity, and our unwavering commitment to dignity.”
He reiterated that implementing the AU’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, must involve restitution, healing, and systemic transformation.
“We cannot speak of development without identity or unity without acknowledging the erasure that has fractured our heritage,” President Mahama added, quoting Marcus Garvey: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, their origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.”
