President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major expansion of his administration’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme, revealing an additional GHS30 billion injections set for 2026.
Speaking at the official launch of the Big Push road project in Afienya in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, the President said the additional funding will extend the programme beyond core infrastructure to include key social and economic sectors such as health, education, agriculture, agribusiness, and sports.
Addressing stakeholders, dignitaries, and community members, he stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the initiative delivers not just physical projects but also long-term national development.
“This year, the Minister of Finance, on my instruction, put aside GHS13.9 billion for the Big Push alone. Much of that money has not been used yet because we were still packaging and going through procurement. So we are going to roll over that money to next year,” President Mahama explained.
He reassured Ghanaians that financing will not be a constraint once the programme moves into its expanded phase. “Next year, we are going to add GHS30 billion to the GHS14 billion. That is why I say payment will not be a problem,” he said.
Highlighting the rationale for broadening the scope, the President said the expanded Big Push will contribute meaningfully to both infrastructure and human development.
“We are adding other sectors to the Big Push, and this includes the health sector, the education sector, the agriculture sector and agribusiness, and it also includes the sports sector,” he emphasised.
The additional investments are intended to accelerate national growth, create jobs, and improve citizens’ quality of life, with the Big Push serving as a transformative vehicle for holistic progress in Ghana.
