President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Majority Leadership in Parliament to immediately withdraw the Private Member’s Bill seeking to repeal the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act.
This was announced by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications in a statement on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
The directive follows yesterday’s meeting with the National Peace Council, where the President publicly endorsed efforts to strengthen the OSP as a key institution in Ghana’s anti-corruption framework.
Mahama emphasized that the office must work to restore public trust and confront corruption decisively.
The withdrawal order comes in response to a bill introduced by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who sponsored legislation proposing the complete abolition of the OSP Act.
Their draft bill, dated December 8, 2025, argued that the institution had deviated from its intended purpose and should be disbanded.
President Mahama disagreed, insisting that the OSP remains essential and must instead be strengthened—not repealed.
He urged the institution to intensify its mandate in line with the principles for which it was created.
