Former President John Mahama has announced the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s commitment to establishing a university in the Western North Region should they be elected in the upcoming December 7 elections.
During a recent community engagement in Enchi, the NDC flag bearer said the move is in line with the NDC’s longstanding policy of ensuring each region has at least one university.
Mahama explained that during his previous tenure, the NDC government made strides toward higher education equity by building universities in underserved regions.
“According to the NDC policy, each region should have at least one university. When we were in power, some regions, like Brong Ahafo and Volta, didn’t have universities. So, we built the University for Development Studies, the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Volta, the University of Environment in the Eastern Region, and the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Brong Ahafo,” he stated.
The former president further highlighted that when Ghana was re-divided into sixteen regions, the NDC planned for each of the six newly created regions to also receive a university or campus. Mahama urged the Western North Region to set aside land for the prospective institution.
“When it’s your region’s turn and you have set aside land for a university, we will assess it, and if all goes well, we will establish a university there,” he assured the community members.
Mahama’s commitment to education comes as he tours the Western North Region, where he is set to meet with chiefs, local authorities, and opinion leaders. He is also expected to engage with party supporters and residents to strengthen support in the region.
The two-day campaign tour forms part of Mahama’s broader strategy to garner votes across Ghana as he pledges to prioritize education and regional development if he is elected back into office.
