A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Prof. Benedicta Yayra Fosu-Mensah, has stated that President John Dramani Mahama’s position on LGBTQ+ issues remains unchanged.
Speaking during an interview with Lily Mohammed on GHToday on GHone TV on Wednesday, February 11, Prof. Fosu-Mensah said the President’s stance is rooted in Ghana’s norms and traditions, stressing that the matter should be handled in accordance with the country’s legislative procedures.
“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s position has not changed. He just wants Parliament to go through the process and he will assent to the bill,” she stated.
According to her, President Mahama is committed to respecting Ghana’s cultural values and will assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill once Parliament completes the necessary processes.
“We talked about adding value to our resources. We talked about establishing gold boards so that our gold will not just be mined and sent out for others to polish and resell to us at a high price,” she said.
She recalled that ahead of the elections, the NDC promised to establish a gold board to regulate the gold sector and ensure value addition. According to her, the initiative is already yielding results, contributing to economic stability and strengthening the performance of the cedi.
“This is a testament of what the NDC and His Excellency John Dramani Mahama stand for. We are not going to have a Ghana where we depend on foreign aid and go cup in hand begging,” she added.
She explained that the Ghana Gold Board is now involved in jewellery production and regulates who sells gold and how much is sold, a move she believes has streamlined the system and increased revenue.
“We are no more going to have a Ghana where we will depend on the foreigners for everything. Always going cup in hand begging and they will give us their time before they give us something, But we are going to build, we are going to add value to our resources and make sure that these things give us the good money that we are”, she stated.
