President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday November 22, 2025 commissioned a state-of-the-art Katon360 Smart Classroom Block at Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco), marking another milestone in his administration’s push to modernise teaching and learning across the country.

The ceremony underscored government’s broader policy goal of making education more seamless, engaging and technologically driven.

The initiative forms part of the Mahama government’s commitment to ensure that Ghanaian students develop a strong interest in learning through interactive digital tools, and emerge fully prepared for the competitive demands of the 21st century. By integrating smart boards, tablets, virtual learning systems and solar-powered infrastructure into classrooms, the policy aims to close the digital gap and position students for future academic and professional opportunities.

Speaking to the media shortly before the commissioning, Lawrence Hornovo, Head of Projects for West Africa at Katon360, described the project as “a school of the future” and a major step in transforming digital education nationwide.

“This is a full 21st-century learning experience,” he said. “The smart block is equipped with a smart screen, tablets for every student, charging cabinets, and the entire facility is solar powered. Every classroom is air-conditioned and connected to the internet. What we are providing is a robust, comprehensive learning environment that prepares students to compete globally.”

Hornovo also addressed concerns raised by some parents about students possibly accessing unauthorised online content.

“Parents should not worry,” he assured. “There is a tracker on every device, and all unauthorised sites including social media have been restricted. The system is designed strictly for academic work.”
He further outlined Katon360’s maintenance plan to ensure the devices remain functional nationwide.

“We have technicians assigned to every district, and users can also register issues on our digital support platform,” he explained. “Every tablet has a one-year warranty, and we replace devices with factory defects at no cost. However, user-caused damage like broken screens must be paid for. Our technicians still handle all repairs and replacements on site.”

Teachers at Ghanasco are already witnessing the impact. Eric Addai, a Physics teacher, described the smart board as “one of the best teaching experiences” of his career.

“The smart board summarises your work. All your materials are uploaded and shared with students before you even get to class,” he said. “Even when you’re not present, you can upload lessons for them to study. It keeps students attentive, allows for clear demonstrations, and ensures no one is left behind. Our biggest challenge now is internet connectivity, but beyond that, the system is far more efficient than traditional teaching.”

For students, the shift from traditional methods to interactive learning has been equally transformative. Iman Jeswinde Ismaila Abdul-Fatawu, a science student, said the new digital approach has improved their learning experience.

“When I came here, I thought learning would be like JHS, but the Katon360 app has changed everything,” he said. “With the tablets and virtual access to facilitators, learning has become easier and more enjoyable. We are grateful to the President and the government for giving us this opportunity.”

The Ghanasco Smart Classroom Block is the second in the country and the first in northern Ghana. With the government’s renewed focus on digital transformation in education, the initiative is expected to expand to more schools nationwide, providing thousands of students with a modern, technology-enhanced learning environment.
