Massive gridlock hits Ayawaso East as by-election begins

Heavy traffic congestion has hit Ayawaso East as thousands of voters head to polling stations for the parliamentary by-election.

Major traffic congestion has gripped parts of the Ayawaso East Constituency as thousands of residents turn out to vote in today’s parliamentary by-election.

Long queues of vehicles were reported along key roads within the constituency Tuesday morning, with commercial drivers and commuters experiencing significant delays as security checkpoints and increased pedestrian movement slowed traffic flow.

More than 40,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the area’s four-term MP, Mahama Naser Toure. The late legislator passed away after a short illness at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Five candidates are contesting the seat, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and two independent contenders.

The Electoral Commission had earlier engaged political parties through an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to streamline preparations for the polls.

Security personnel have been stationed at polling centres to maintain order as voting proceeds. Meanwhile, the NDC has announced the expulsion of Umar Sanda after he chose to contest the election as an independent candidate.
