Kylian Mbappe netted twice to inspire Real Madrid to a thrilling 2-1 win over Barcelona in Sunday’s El Clasico at the Spotify Camp Nou, bringing their fierce rivals’ unbeaten start to the La Liga season to an end.
The French striker scored in the 41st minute before grabbing the decisive goal in the 87th minute to secure all three points for Jose Mourinho’s side in the first Clasico of the 2026/27 campaign. The victory also ended Barcelona’s run of nine consecutive league wins and strengthened Real Madrid’s position in the title race.
Real Madrid broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval when Yan Diomande’s low cross took a deflection off Barcelona defender Gerard Martin and fell into Mbappe’s path. The forward made no mistake with his finish to put the visitors ahead. Barcelona had chances to level before half-time, but Lamine Yamal missed a promising opportunity as Madrid went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Barcelona returned from the interval with renewed determination and restored parity in the 61st minute through Raphinha. The Brazilian winger latched onto a pass from Pedri inside the penalty area and fired past Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to make it 1-1.
The hosts continued to search for a winner, but Real Madrid remained a threat on the counterattack. Lunin made several important saves to keep Barcelona at bay, including a vital stop to deny Gerard Martin with a header. Just when the contest appeared destined to end in a draw, Madrid struck the decisive blow late in the game.
Jude Bellingham sparked the move with an excellent turn in midfield before Eduardo Camavinga advanced and squared the ball for Mbappe. The Frenchman calmly finished into an unguarded net in the 87th minute to restore Madrid’s lead. The goal prompted celebrations from Mourinho and his players as they sealed an impressive away victory.
The result leaves Barcelona at the top of the La Liga standings with 27 points from 10 matches, while Real Madrid occupy third place with 24 points, three behind their rivals. Atletico Madrid sit second with 25 points, ensuring the Spanish title race remains wide open following a dramatic weekend.
Mbappe’s two goals proved decisive on the night, giving Real Madrid the Clasico bragging rights and sending a strong message to their rivals in the battle for the La Liga crown.
