This year’s McDan Open West Africa Tennis Championship ended on a high note at the Accra Stadium over the weekend
And although a Ghanaian failed to lift the ultimate trophy and the mouthwatering cash prize ($10,000), the five-day tennis fiesta will go into the history books as one of the well-organized and attended events on the continent.
Chairman of the McDan Group (Headline sponsor), Dr Daniel McKorley in his brief address pointed out that the high standards witnessed in the just-ended tourney attests to how far his outfit wants to take tennis to.
He stated that “We want to take tennis very high in the country and beyond, what you are witnessing today is a clear testament of where we want to see the sport.
“It’s been great five days of tennis-competition is very high, high attendance and I must commend our supporting sponsors-UMB Bank, GNPC, Rush Energy Drink, Cocobod and AFWEST Security. Of course the Tennis Federation and the media can not be left out.”
Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah parted McDan Group and the supporting sponsors for breathing life into the sport, which was once vibrant.
It was Togolese Thomas Setodji, who recorded two-straight wins- 6-2, 6-1 over Beninois Felix Hounkpevi in the final.
Defending women’s champion Sarah Adegoke defeated youngster Angel McCleod in an all Nigerian women’s final to become the second player to win back-to-back McDan Open title equaling Ghanaian player Francisca Nyarko’s record set in 2014 and 2015.
Setodji and Adegoke received $3,000 and $1,000 respectively as cash prizes in addition to silverwares and products from the supporting sponsors including Twellium Industries, COCOBOD, GNPC and Babolat.
