The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pointed to recent economic improvements as evidence of renewed public trust in the Mahama administration.
Naa Atswei Nee Okpey, Head of Corporate Affairs for the party, said the outcome of the Ayawaso East by-election reaffirmed Ghanaians’ confidence in President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed on March 4, 2026, Naa Atswei emphasized that the NDC’s policies are producing tangible results for citizens, particularly in areas such as inflation, fuel costs, and debt management.
“You were filling your tank with GH¢1,000; today you are doing GH¢600. That is money back into your pocket,” she said, highlighting the drop in fuel prices under the current administration. She also noted the removal of levies, including the e-levy and COVID-related charges, as steps to reduce the cost of living.
On broader fiscal management, Naa Atswei pointed to improvements in the nation’s debt-to-GDP ratio compared with the previous government. “Today, debts are not suffocating the country. We are not borrowing recklessly,” she stated.
The NDC official also outlined government reforms aimed at controlling expenditure, including reducing the number of ministers from over 100 to 60 and introducing an appointees’ code of conduct to ensure officials share in citizens’ sacrifices.
“These moves are part of broader efforts to redirect resources to priority sectors such as Free SHS, TVET education, and infrastructure,” she explained.
Linking the Ayawaso East by-election results to public endorsement, Naa Atswei said the victory reflected approval of the government’s performance, “The statement they have made is that President John Dramani Mahama is the president they want, and Baba Jamal is the MP they want.”
She urged the opposition to acknowledge past mismanagement and stressed that the NDC remains focused on inclusive development and economic empowerment.
