Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has indicated that the national digital address system will be outdoored in July 2017.
Speaking at the National Policy Summit in Accra Monday, May 15, 2017 Dr. Bawumia added that the digital address system is a key element of a modernized and a formal economy.
“We want a unique digital address system for the country and we are hopeful that by July this year we should be able to outdoor the national digital address system and before the national identification system, the national digital property addressing system would ensure that every land or property would be assigned a unique identifier so that when you go to do the national identification your address system will be available as well in order to capture the two in the database,” Dr Bawumia noted.
He added: “The role of an address system in the country is mostly underestimated but very key to a nation’s economy and would allow us to ‘leapfrog’ into a digital address mapping system rather than just the street name. The address system would make sure that every place we have here in Ghana will have a unique GPS code and a post code and identify uniquely where every place is and deliver goods and services with ease.
“If we have the Digital Addressing System and the National Identification System and also we have interoperability of these two in the digital payment space, we would have dealt with the engine that is going to drive this economic foundation.”
The finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta during the 2017 Budget Statement to Parliament hinted of government’s intention to introduce the digital address system which is aimed at facilitating improved ownership data and unique identification of properties across the country.
