Political communications expert Mohammed Taufiq Adamu has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to annul the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, over allegations of vote buying.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, February 9, Adamu said, “The election was marred with a lot of corruption. Vote buying is a corrupt act. And I know we all agree to that,” stressing that gifts distributed to delegates on election day—including televisions, cash, eggs, and pepper—were clearly intended to influence voting decisions.
He further urged the NDC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to take decisive action. “If the NEC is serious about the fight against corruption, I think this is an opportunity for them to annul the election,” Adamu said.
Adamu also warned of the broader implications for future elections, noting that unchecked practices could escalate during the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
“If just by election, people are giving 3,000 plus televisions, a whole lot of gifts… then what happens to the presidential primaries? Then I need to be a delegate. Everybody must be a delegate then,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NDC has established a three-member committee to investigate the allegations, with a report expected by Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has also launched a separate probe into the matter.
The NDC Majority Caucus has demanded the cancellation of the primary and the disqualification of any candidates found to have engaged in vote buying.
However, Baba Jamal, the key figure in the allegations, has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he is prepared to face any investigative committee.
