The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has released an additional GH¢267.67 million to settle outstanding claims submitted by health facilities across the country, as part of ongoing efforts to sustain Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The payment, approved by NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare-Bampoe, covers vetted claims up to April 2025 and brings total disbursements over the past seven months to more than GH¢1.5 billion.
According to a statement issued by the Authority dated Tuesday, July 8, the funds were distributed across three main categories of health providers:
- Public health facilities received GH¢120.7 million (45%)
- Private health facilities received GH¢100.2 million (37%)
- Mission facilities were paid GH¢46.7 million (17%)
The NHIA emphasized that the prompt payment regime introduced earlier this year has played a crucial role in maintaining a debt-free status for 2025, while ensuring timely reimbursements to providers across the country.
“This latest payment brings the total amount released by the NHIA over the last seven months to over 1.5 billion Ghana cedis, underscoring the Authority’s ongoing commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS),” the statement noted.
The release of funds is in line with the NHIA’s mandate to reimburse healthcare services covered under the NHIS Benefit Package.
The package includes treatment for over 95% of disease conditions in Ghana and is supported by a list of more than 550 essential medicines.
The Authority urged health providers to utilize the funds to enhance service delivery, particularly in light of recent public health concerns such as COVID-19 outbreaks at the University of Ghana and H1N1 cases in the Eastern Region.
The NHIA also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, adding that additional payments are planned by August 2025 as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s universal health coverage agenda.
