NPP’s 2024 setback linked to loss of experienced leadership – Peter Antwi Boasiako

Dr Peter Boasiako has attributed part of the party’s 2024 election difficulties to changes in its frontline leadership.

Ing. Dr. Peter Antwi Boasiako, campaign spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) national chairmanship hopeful John Boadu and former Deputy Director-General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), says the lack of experienced leadership contributed to the party’s difficulties in the 2024 general election.

He explained that, the NPP made a critical leadership change shortly before the 2024 election by replacing its frontline leadership, including the General Secretary and other key executives.

Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae, Dr Boasiako said the decision to bring in new leadership at a time when the party was preparing for a crucial election meant the NPP went into the contest without the level of experience he believes was needed to effectively manage the election.

“We have seen the results in 2024, when we decided to throw away all the frontline leadership of the party.”

Dr Boasiako said the changes were particularly significant because the party was pursuing its “break the eight” agenda and therefore needed experienced hands to help navigate the electoral process.

He argued that replacing the party’s experienced frontline leadership and introducing new executives at such a critical period affected the NPP’s ability to effectively confront the challenges of the 2024 election.

According to him, the experience and knowledge John Boadu brings to the party could be important in rebuilding the NPP and strengthening its leadership ahead of the 2028 election.

“To me, John Boadu’s experience and knowledge or skills coming in is going to really help,” he said.

Dr Boasiako also argued that the party does not necessarily have to completely replace its existing leadership, but could combine the experience of current executives with that of experienced former leaders.

“I’m sure there will be other few existing executives who can be retained, and then you bring in the experience of John Boadu,” he added.

He said such a combination could provide the party with the experience and institutional knowledge needed to strengthen its structures and prepare more effectively for future elections.

Dr Boasiako believes the NPP can therefore draw lessons from its 2024 experience by finding a balance between retaining existing executives and bringing experienced former leaders back into positions where their knowledge can contribute to the party’s rebuilding efforts.

For Dr Boasiako, combining the experience of figures such as John Boadu with the existing leadership would provide the party with a broader pool of knowledge as it prepares for its next major electoral challenge.

He expressed confidence that such an approach could help the NPP strengthen its leadership and organisational structures and “bounce back strongly” ahead of the 2028 general election.
