The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded the immediate removal of heads of key state institutions responsible for Ghana’s ports, airports, customs, intelligence and security, following a series of narcotics seizures linked to the country.
Speaking at a presser on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye said the party believes officials within the security and enforcement chain must be held accountable for the seizures.
He said the NPP would have expected the government to remove officials responsible for institutions involved in border and cargo security.
“We would have thought that a president confronted with this scale of national disgrace would move immediately to relieve of their duties every official in the chain of command who has failed this country.”
The party is therefore demanding the removal of the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission and the National Security Coordinator.
It also wants the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, Commissioner-General of the Customs Division and Inspector-General of Police removed from office.
Nana Boakye said the demand follows what the NPP described as a growing number of major narcotics interceptions in Ghana and abroad.
The cases cited include the interception of more than 3.3 tonnes of cocaine at Pedu Junction in March 2025, 866 parcels of suspected cocaine at Tema Harbour in August 2026 and nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at France’s Port of Dunkirk in September 2026.
The NPP also raised specific concerns about the management of Tema Port, questioning the decision to extend the contract of an officer who had reached retirement age.
Nana Boakye said, “When a port descends into a narcotics highway on an officer’s watch, the ordinary response of a serious government is to remove that officer, not to renew him.”
He further questioned the circumstances surrounding the contract extension, alleging a possible family connection to the Finance Minister.
The party is also calling for the immediate recall of Parliament and the establishment of a bipartisan committee to conduct a public inquiry into the seizures.
