The Deputy Spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, has condemned what she describes as a “judicial coup” orchestrated by President John Mahama’s administration following the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo in 2025.
Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Dr. Amoakoh said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) found the process troubling, insisting that the ruling party’s actions undermined Ghana’s democratic values.
“It’s very obvious that the NPP and the minority were not happy with how the removal of the Chief Justice played out. It’s baffling that a replacement was vetted and sworn in while all legal avenues available to Torkornoo had not been exhausted,” she stated.
Dr. Amoakoh stressed that even if the opposition lacked the numbers to reverse the decision, they had a duty to make their position clear “for the record of democracy.”
She added, “In 2025, when His Excellency John Mahama undertook the judicial coup, the NPP did not sit quiet. It must be recorded in history that we didn’t fold our arms when the NDC interfered with the judiciary at the highest level.”
She further urged the government to act with caution and allow democratic institutions to function independently, emphasizing that “posterity will remember those who stood for justice even when the odds were against them.”
