Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has cautioned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could further harm its electoral fortunes if it does not change its current approach in opposition. According to him, the party’s aggressive posture since its defeat in the 2024 general election has not helped it regain grassroots support and may even drive some voters away.
“The ordinary Ghanaian is now reading between the lines, especially when it comes to politics and communication. That’s why people are choosing not to engage with certain things,” he said in an interview on Starr Today with Tutuwaa Danso.
“The aggressiveness of the NPP is not yielding the right results. This is a party that describes itself as liberal democrats, a party that believes in sound arguments, but that’s not what we’re seeing. What we are seeing is a kind of unguided bravado.”
Dr. Asante Otchere also remarked that “the NPP went to the market too early with its criticism of the new administration,” arguing that the party should rather spend more time regrouping and reconnecting with its support base.
“The quality of opposition we are witnessing now is one that is bereft of constructive ideas and that’s not helping them,” he added.
Since its loss in December 2024, the NPP has adopted a combative stance organizing press conferences to analyze its defeat, frequently challenging government policies in Parliament, and openly criticizing President Mahama’s leadership.
In March, the party attacked the 2025 Budget, describing it as lacking credibility. More recently, it led a protest in Accra over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, and on May 8, 2025, labeled President Mahama’s first 120 days in office as “120 bitter days.”
