The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has confirmed a fatal motor accident involving a fuel tanker at Ntoaso on the Accra–Suhum Dual Carriageway near Nsawam, and has urged transport operators in the petroleum sector to tighten safety protocols.
In a statement on Monday, February 16, 2026, the Authority said the incident occurred in the early hours of February 14, when a tanker transporting petrol from Tema to Kumasi reportedly lost control around 4:30am.
According to preliminary findings, “the tanker’s bulk reportedly detached from the tractor head, fell onto the roadside, and subsequently exploded,” triggering a fire that “engulfed several vehicles and motorcycles traveling behind the tanker.”
The NRSA said it had received reports of “multiple fatalities, including unidentified victims,” with other injured road users transported to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The Authority praised the Ghana National Fire Service for a quick emergency response, commending teams from Suhum and Nsawam for “their swift efforts in containing and extinguishing the fire, thereby preventing further loss of life and property.”
Following the incident, the NRSA called on Oil Marketing Companies, bulk transport operators and other stakeholders to “immediately review and strengthen their internal safety control protocols,” including vehicle inspection and maintenance, coupling and loading procedures, driver training and fatigue management.
It also cautioned road users to avoid dangerous behaviour at accident scenes, warning especially against attempts to siphon fuel from fallen tankers.
“Road users, especially pedestrians and individuals who rush to accident scenes to siphon fuel from fallen tankers, are strongly cautioned to desist from such dangerous conduct,” the statement said.
