The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu has directed the immediate suspension of the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, pending investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.

According to the ministry in a statement on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the minister has instructed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend the headmaster while investigations continue.

“The Honourable Minister considers the issue serious and has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to take effective immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter,” the statement said.

Mr. Iddrisu has also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters to investigate the allegations.

“The Minister has also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters to commence investigations into the matter,” the statement added.

The ministry and the GES reiterated that they would not tolerate alleged misconduct in educational institutions and stressed the responsibility of teachers to protect students under their care.

“Parents and Guardians have entrusted their wards in the care of teachers whose responsibilities are to protect and safeguard the children and not abuse them.”

The latest development comes about two months after violence erupted at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, where the headmaster was attacked by some students on August 5, 2026, following tensions on campus.

The disturbance reportedly followed claims by students that a foetus had been buried on the school premises. Some students allegedly accused the headmaster of involvement in ritual activities, leading to a confrontation in which he sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police arrested six students in connection with the attack and destruction of property.

In a subsequent court proceeding, two teachers and a student were remanded over their alleged involvement in the incident, including accusations of abetting the assault and unlawful damage.
