Mathematics continues to pose a major challenge for Ghanaian students, as the 2025 WASSCE results reveal that less than half of candidates passed the core subject. Out of 461,736 candidates, only 209,068, representing 48.73 percent, achieved grades A1-C6 in Mathematics.
This represents a significant decline from previous years, with pass rates dropping steadily from 62.23 percent in 2023 to 48.73 percent in 2025.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) emphasized the need for vigilance against exam malpractice, noting that some results were cancelled or withheld due to irregularities.
“Following completion of investigations into some of the cases of irregularity reported during the conduct of the examination, the Ghana Examinations Committee…approved cancellation of subject results of 6,295 candidates for bringing foreign material…,” the statement read.
The poor performance has reignited discussions among educators and policymakers regarding systemic gaps in Ghana’s education sector.
Experts are calling for urgent curriculum reforms, enhanced teacher training, and better learning resources to address the declining trend in Mathematics achievement.
