Parliament was thrown into mourning today, Monday, July 7, 2025, following the sudden death of Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, prompting an abrupt suspension of proceedings.
The tragic news, which broke during the morning session, left many MPs visibly shaken, with some seen in tears on the floor of the House.
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, in a solemn mood, formally announced the passing of the Akwatia MP, requesting that proceedings be halted to allow members time to grieve.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, equally shocked by the news, supported the call to suspend business for the day, describing Mr. Kumi’s death as a devastating loss to the House and the country.
Mr. Kumi, who was actively participating in parliamentary business as recently as last week, reportedly died early this morning after suffering a heart attack.
The late MP’s passing comes amid ongoing legal battles over his election to Parliament.
He was accused of defying an injunction that barred him from being sworn in as the MP for Akwatia due to legal disputes surrounding the December 2024 election results.
Despite the injunction, Mr. Kumi proceeded with his swearing-in on January 7, 2025.
