Parliament will revert to its traditional 10:00 a.m. sittings following growing concerns over the health and security implications of its current 2:00 p.m. schedule.
The change, according to the Business Statement for the week ending Friday, October 24, 2025, comes after the Business Committee of Parliament, chaired by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, reviewed the effects of the afternoon sittings on members and staff.
“The Business Committee notes that the 2:00 p.m. start time, which was introduced to boost participation in parliamentary business, has not achieved the desired results,” the statement said.
“In most cases, it has led to late adjournments, posing health and security risks to MPs, staff, and visitors — including students who travel long distances to observe proceedings.”
The Committee emphasized that the return to morning sittings is expected to improve attendance, participation, and the overall efficiency of parliamentary work. “This adjustment may be reviewed when necessary,” the statement added.
The Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, which opened today, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, is anticipated to be one of the most demanding sessions of the year.
Lawmakers are expected to debate and approve the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, as well as scrutinize budget estimates for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). Several financial bills will also be considered before the House rises for the Christmas recess.
The Business Statement further outlines the week’s activities, including formal communications from the Speaker, ministerial and Members’ statements, and the presentation and consideration of Bills, Papers, and Committee reports in accordance with the Standing Orders of Parliament.
