PMMC was a “mess” when I took over – Opare Hammond

The  Managing director of the Precious Mineral Marketing Commission (PMMC) Kwadwo Opare Hammond has said the company had been run down by the Mahama administration until he took over after the New Patriotic Party won power in 2016.

According to him, auditors  had confirmed that the debt of the company far outweighed its asset when he was put in charge of affairs at the gold firm.

He told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Monday that he, despite the inherited challenges, has turned the fortunes of the company around and “ things are looking good for the firm”.

“The company was in a mess, and that is the fact and we have come and we have turn the company around. Now things are looking far far better than they used to be The debt of the company was more than the asset when I took over. And this was after a valuation was done before we took over,”he said .

He further noted that due to the prudent economic decisions he and his board have taken since they took over the management of the company, payment of salaries for staff which used to be a problem has now been addressed.

“Right now we are even able to pay ahead of the month. Since January we have cleared all salary arrears. Nobody is owed arrears at PMMC again.

He however bemoaned the recent demonstration against him by the staff of the company calling it a stab in the back since has good relationship with them.

“ I have a great relationship with many of them and nobody was able to approach me with their concern. These are issues if they had sort for clarification they would have gotten it. Maybe if they had used the grievance process, all these things would not have come out. If they had asked me about these things I would explained to them. I’m still surprised and shocked because since I took over I have come to the level of the staff.

“I see them, I call them, I know them by the names. I go to their offices and engage them about their family and then they pull such a surprise on me, you don’t do that. Even those who led the demonstration, a day before I had met and spoken to them, nobody told me anything”.
