The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, has disclosed that government has settled its financial obligations on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project, with a total of GH¢809 million paid to the contractor as of August 4, 2025.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on Monday, August 18, Mr. Agyei detailed that the payments were made in three tranches; on July 24, July 30, and August 4; completing the contractor’s request in full.
“With these payments, government has cleared every outstanding amount due the contractor, totaling about GH¢809 million,” he confirmed.
His announcement comes as contractors returned to the site last week to resume repair works on the busy highway, bringing some relief to commuters who have endured weeks of unbearable gridlock.
The issue of delayed works on the Nsawam road has been at the centre of growing agitation by transport unions. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, together with the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and other operators, had earlier threatened a nationwide strike if government failed to act.

Though contractors are now back on site, the GPRTU maintains that its intended strike still stands until it is satisfied with the pace of progress.
The union is expected to announce its next line of action after its one-week ultimatum expires on Wednesday, August 20.
