A police officer stationed at the Winneba-Kasoa checkpoint has reportedly been killed after three vehicles rammed into him.
The gory accident occurred overnight at Kantanka Junction along the highway.
Information gathered at the scene revealed that the three vehicles involved in the fatal incident were a Kia truck with registration number GR-6419-N, a trailer with registration number GE-5468-22, and a fuel tanker bearing the number plate GY-2186-13.
Eyewitnesses report that the Kia truck, which was heading towards Mankessim Road, crashed into the police barricade, hitting a trailer and a nearby fuel tanker that had been parked earlier. The series of collisions caused the out-of-control vehicles to veer into the police officer, running him over.
Speaking to GHOne News’ Central Region Correspondent, one eyewitness said the Kia driver had been asleep in the lead-up to the initial crash.
Local residents reported that they were in their homes when they heard a loud crash, prompting them to rush to the scene.
Three persons aboard the vehicles have been injured and are now receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased police officer has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
