The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says the outcome of the just ended election is an indication that people of Ghana cannot be taken for granted.
Delivering his initial remarks following the resumption of the House, Dr. Forson reminded lawmakers of the landslide victory the National Democratic Congress chalked in both parliamentary and presidential elections, warning that it was a wakeup call for all politicians.
He itemized a litany of ills supervised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which he observed contributed to the party’s electoral downfall.
“The Ghanaian people have shown that they cannot be taken for granted and that when it matters the most, they will either reward those in office or punish those in office.
“The NPP has been punished for its poor governance, economic mismanagement, obstinacy, greed, state capture, arrogance of power, impunity, lawlessness and persecution of political opponents.
“Mr. Speaker, the lesson of what happened to the NPP and the outgoing government is that the political class cannot and should not take the people of Ghana for granted,” Leader Forson said on the floor of the House.
He added that the results “called for introspection on the part of the political class”.
The National Democratic Congress is set to command a two-third majority when the 9th Parliament convenes next month.
The party has won over 180 parliamentary seats having engineered campaigns to prevail in the governing NPP strongholds and topple incumbent lawmakers who also serve in the Executive.
Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to reconvene the current parliament on Monday comes after political tussles between the majority and minority sides, complicated by the Supreme Court’s verdict annuling the vacancies of four MPs.
