Former Deputy Director for Prisons and MP for Talensi, Benson Baba Tongo, has expressed his discontent with the government’s recent actions, stating, “We don’t help people, we help ourselves.” He criticizes the recruitment of 500 individuals into the police service, bypassing traditional protocol, asking, “What respect will they give to the IGP and police hierarchy?”
Tongo emphasizes, “It’s not how we run an institution of state.” He also notes, “A driver is not a president,” referencing the Vice President’s comment. “I have seen people of such categories being elected as presidents, vice presidents, ministers, members of parliament.”
Tongo argues that the constitution is being manipulated by those who initially refused to contribute to its creation. “The very people who are now saying that the constitution gives them the power, were the people who refused to go to the constituent assembly.”
He also expresses concern about the boycott of the Accord, a national forum aimed at addressing economic challenges, and the overlooking of the Peace Council. “Critical issues require broader consultation, but they refuse to attend,” Tongo notes. “I get worried that there are institutions of the state that are not being utilized.”
Tongo stresses the need for accountability and transparency in government institutions. “When you breach protocol, you undermine the very foundations of our democracy,” he warns. “We must ensure that our institutions are respected and protected.”
Tongo’s comments come at a time when the government is facing criticism for its handling of various national issues. His concerns highlight the need for good governance and adherence to established protocols to ensure the smooth functioning of state institutions.
Tongo calls for the government to engage in inclusive decision-making processes, saying, “The government must involve all stakeholders in decision-making to ensure that the interests of all citizens are represented.” He also emphasizes the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those in power do not abuse their positions.
By speaking out against protocol breaches and advocating for good governance, Tongo hopes to inspire positive change and promote a more transparent and accountable government.
