Rectify procedural lapses in Anti-LGBTQ Bill to ensure its legitimacy – Catholic Bishops Conference to Parliament

The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Reverend Matthew Kwesi Gyamfi, has called for a critical review of the parliamentary processes surrounding the pending Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as Anti-LGBTQ Bill stressing that procedural integrity is essential to the bill’s legitimacy.

Speaking on Starr FM’s Morning Show, Morning Starr, Most Rev. Gyamfi urged parliamentarians to resolve differences regarding the bill, particularly concerns raised about alleged procedural lapses, and claims that the draft may have been altered in a way that undermines its original intent.

“We are not saying that [the bill should not be passed]. What we are saying is that Parliament has its own rules and its laws. If they know that they have gone against their processes of passing a bill, and they want to correct it, they know what to do,” he said.

The bill, which has sparked significant national debate, is viewed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference as a foundational issue for Ghanaian society.

Most Rev. Gyamfi emphasized the importance of ensuring the legislation remains a consensus-driven, bipartisan effort to maintain public trust in government institutions.

“The big deal is that who, who, who’s Ghanaian is not from a family? Who Ghanaian has not been brought up…[to have] life come from a family?” Most Rev. Gyamfi explained.

“And unbeknownst to people, it is the quality of the aggregate of families that we have that determines the quality of whatever is going on in the country,” he added.

Addressing the legislative delay and the path forward, the Catholic leader expressed that the government should demonstrate its commitment to the bill by ensuring it reaches the President’s desk before the current Parliament concludes its tenure.

He further underscored that failure to finalize the bill would be a “major blow to the faith and the trust that Ghanaians have invested in governments.”

Most Rev. Gyamfi concluded by reiterating the Church’s stance, stating, “by all means, let’s get a bill that will protect the family.”
