Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Adutwum is urging President John Mahama to reverse his decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo in order to boost foreign investor confidence in the judiciary.
He said businesspersons who wanted to operate in Ghana would want to do so in an environment where the judiciary is independent from political influences.
Dr. Adutwum, who previously served as Minister of Education in the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, said the government regarded foreign investment as an objective and should not make any moves to jeopardize it.
“This president wants investors to come in and investors sitting anywhere in the world, considering Ghana, will say to himself or herself, ‘I don’t want to be in any country where the judiciary doesn’t have the freedom to act on my case, in case my business has a challenge.
“Within the context of what this president wants to do, transformation of Ghana, I think it is important that he takes a second look,” Dr. Adutwum averred.
The lawmaker was speaking at the staged demonstration, led by opposition political parties, calling on President Mahama to reverse his decision to suspend Chief Justice Torkonoo.
Several opposition lawmakers and New Patriotic Party bigwigs including General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua and Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, are in attendance.
The protest began at the premises of the Supreme Court. The demonstrators will make their way to Parliament and head to the Jubilee House where there will present petitions arguing against the suspension.
