The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, has appealed to striking teachers to return to the classroom while negotiations continue, warning that the industrial action is disrupting teaching and learning across the country.
The call comes as the teachers’ strike enters its fourth day.
Jamal made the appeal while commissioning several developmental projects in the constituency, including educational facilities and the renovated Nima roundabout.
“We appeal to the teachers to collaborate with the Education Ministry so that together we can build this country. It’s not all the demands that can be met at the same time, so we need to show some patriotism, some selflessness, so that we can together work,” he said.
“I also urge the ministry to also listen to the teachers; it is a two-way affair, it can’t be one-way affair.”
Among the projects commissioned were a 12-unit classroom block at the Nima cluster of schools, a 20-seater washroom facility at Flagstaff House Basic School, and a 12-seater washroom at the Nima cluster of schools.
The Education Directorate said the new facilities would create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
“The children have been suffering. They always have to go out and ease themselves before coming back to school. Some do not even come. But once the toilet facility has been completed, I think it will go a long way to help our learners. We want to thank them and assure them that we’re engaging in a maintenance culture,” an Official of the school said.
Beyond the schools, the renovated Nima roundabout is expected to ease traffic congestion for motorists and commuters in the municipality.
At the commissioning, Jamal paid tribute to the late Member of Parliament who had cut the sod for the project but has since passed away, saying: “This roundabout is a symbol for Ayawaso East… May Allah forgive his soul.”
