Stabbing incident at KNUST has nothing to do with NPP – Kwesi Botchway Jnr

Kwesi Botchway Jnr., an aide to former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted allegations linking a member of the Bawumia campaign team to a stabbing incident involving a supporter of Kennedy Agyapong.

The incident, which occurred in Kumasi during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Thank You” tour, has prompted Agyapong—a former presidential aspirant—to withdraw from the nationwide exercise, citing concerns for the safety of his supporters.

The altercation reportedly involved members of the KNUST-based Unity Hall Jama group, who were invited by Agyapong’s team to perform at a gathering held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama.

Following the incident, Agyapong’s team filed a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police, with the former MP vowing to seek justice for the victim.

However, Mr. Botchway, speaking on *Morning Starr* with Naa Dedei Tettey, strongly denied any involvement of Dr. Bawumia’s team or the NPP in the incident.

He described the stabbing as an internal scuffle among the Jama performers and called for a thorough police investigation.

According to him, a businessman attending the event gave money to the Jama group, which triggered a heated dispute among the performers.

The situation escalated, and during the confusion, one of the students sustained stab wounds and was rushed to the Hospital.

Botchway emphasized that both the Bawumia and Agyapong teams were not directly involved in the incident and urged the public to disregard rumors attempting to politicize the event.

He said, “It was an unfortunate incident and let me start by unequivocally condemning that act and also invite the police to investigate, you know, whatever happened there. But the fact is, I have had a lot of speculations in the media, I heard a lot of rumors here and there about a member of the Dr. Bawumia team stabbing a member of the Kennedy campaign team. I mean, all these speculations are untrue. There is no iota of truth in all these speculations that are being peddled around. In fact, what happened has nothing to do with a new patriotic party or the Thank You Tour.”

He continued, “So, what exactly happened is that, you know the Conti Jama Boys. so activists of the respected Kennedy Agyapong invited the Kunti boys to add some form of flair and excitement to the tour at the Bantama Pentecost Church. And during the jama session, a businessman walked into the auditorium. So, when a businessman walked in, you know, the guys approached him and started singing for him, started telling him. So, he gave them something small for lunch, for water, and immediately he gave them the money.”

“Two of the boys started arguing and quarrelling over the money. So, it became an extremely heated exchange between the guys. So, all the others also went close to the scene to, you know, get to know what was happening. So, it immediately became a form of a banter within themselves. So, during this couple, eventually and unfortunately, one of them got stabbed. Like I have said, this has nothing to do with the party’s Thank You Tour. This has nothing to do with Dr. Bawumia or Kennedy Agyapong campaign team. The person was not stabbed by a member of the Bawumia team, neither was he stabbed because he is a team member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team. That is not the narration at all, and that is not what happened.”
