Ghanaian-British music icon Stephanie Benson has opened up about her breast cancer journey, revealing that the experience did not change her identity or how she sees herself as a woman.
Speaking on Rythymz One-on-One with Krakye on GHOne TV, the celebrated singer explained that she has always been confident in who she is, and her diagnosis did not take away her sense of self-worth, femininity or sexuality.
Stephanie Benson disclosed that the experience affected some of her activities and personal projects, including her School of Performing Arts. She also had to give away much of her wardrobe because the changes associated with her breast cancer journey meant some of her clothes were no longer suitable. However, she maintained that she has always embraced her body and continued to feel beautiful and confident despite the physical changes.
Addressing the fear surrounding breast cancer, Stephanie stressed the importance of strength, awareness and a positive outlook, noting that many people associate the disease with death and allow fear to overwhelm them. She also called attention to breast cancer in men, encouraging greater awareness and early checks, as men can also develop the disease.
Using her personal experience as an example, Stephanie Benson delivered a powerful message of hope to survivors and those currently battling the disease: there is life after cancer.
Her story is a reminder that a cancer diagnosis does not have to define a person’s identity, confidence or future, and life, love and self-acceptance can continue beyond the diagnosis.
