Suhuyini: Afenyo-Markin’s aims to buy time, not to disprove extortion claims

Communications official says Sammy Gyamfi’s allegations carry evidential weight and that court action is a strategic move to manage internal NPP pressure

A Communications Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini has dismissed the notion that Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s decision to initiate court action undermines allegations of wrongdoing levelled against him, arguing instead that the lawsuit is a calculated political manoeuvre designed to buy time and contain internal dissent within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on GHToday on GH One on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, Suhuyini maintained that the legal process does not establish any finding of wrongdoing by the Minority Leader.

Rather, he said, it serves to reinforce the NDC’s broader claims of extortion involving opposition figures.

“Sammy Gyamfi is not one known to make allegations without evidential basis for those allegations. Make no mistake. So, it is his word against Afenyo-Markin’s denial,” Suhuyini stated.

He suggested Afenyo-Markin had little choice but to resort to the courts because his political future was at stake.

“Afenyo-Markin’s political future was on the line. It was on the line. And as a strategic politician as he is, I am sure he got to the conclusion that it is better to buy time in the hope that with time you will be able to manage even the internal dissent within the NPP than to just accept his fate without fighting,” Suhuyini said.

According to the NDC official, remaining silent or declining to sue would have been widely interpreted as an admission.

“Because not fighting, not instituting a court action would affirm that the allegations are indeed true. So, even if the allegations are true, and he knows that the allegations are true, as a matter of political strategy, it would be in his interest to still initiate that court action with the hope of buying time,” he said.

Suhuyini was emphatic that the mere filing of a lawsuit does not invalidate the claims.

“So, the fact that he has initiated court action does not mean that the allegations that were leveled against him, are allegations without a basis? Absolutely not.”

The remarks come amid ongoing political tension between the governing NDC and the opposition NPP over accusations of extortion and related misconduct.

Afenyo-Markin has denied the allegations. The court case is expected to test the competing narratives in the months ahead.
