Ghana, Türkiye expand scholarship opportunities to cover sports studies

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has secured an expansion of Türkiye’s scholarship programme to include sports-related disciplines, following a meeting with Mr. Abdulhadi Turus, President of the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), in Ankara on August 18, 2025.

During the meeting, Mr. Turus outlined YTB’s international education initiatives, highlighting the Türkiye Scholarships, which since 2011 have supported more than 45,000 students worldwide. He revealed that in 2025 alone, 628 Ghanaian students applied for placements in areas such as agriculture, engineering, international trade, and economics.

He further explained that scholarship offers can be tailored to the development priorities of partner nations, with support including Turkish language training and postgraduate opportunities.

Hon. Adams praised YTB’s role in supporting Ghana’s human resource development, noting that the scholarships have produced professionals such as interpreters and technical experts who are vital to advancing bilateral trade and cooperation. He emphasised that Ghana Türkiye relations, established in 1958, continue to deepen through education and skills training.

The Minister also requested that scholarships be expanded to cover sports-related courses such as sports science, management, and recreation studies. He explained that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, Ghana is prioritising the revival of school sports, and advanced training opportunities in Türkiye would play a key role in developing the next generation of sports professionals.

In response, YTB agreed to widen the scope of its scholarships to include sports-focused disciplines for Ghanaian students. Both parties concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening educational and cultural cooperation while ensuring scholarship programmes align with Ghana’s national development goals.

Gov’t introduces targeted scholarships for underrepresented communities — Mahama

The government has announced a new scholarship initiative aimed at supporting students from underrepresented communities and marginalized groups to access tertiary education, as part of efforts to promote social equity and national development.

The announcement was made by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, July 4, at the launch of the ‘No Fees Stress’ Policy in Koforidua, a major intervention designed to ease financial constraints faced by Ghanaian students in higher education.

According to President Mahama, the government has diversified its student funding system to include targeted scholarships that will prioritise students from disadvantaged communities and those pursuing academic programs crucial to the nation’s development agenda.

“We also have diversified student funding mechanism including targeted scholarships for underrepresented communities and disciplines that are vital to our national development” Said President John Dramani Mahama

The President explained that the targeted scholarships form part of a broader strategy to address longstanding disparities in access to higher education, particularly for students from rural areas, low-income families, and minority groups.

He noted that despite progress made through Ghana’s Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) and Free SHS programs, many young people still face financial barriers to tertiary education.

President Mahama underscored the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive development by ensuring that no qualified Ghanaian is denied tertiary education because of their background or financial circumstances.

The No – Fees Stress policy has been designed with deliberate inclusivity and scalability.

According to President Mahama, under this policy the government will cover the academic related fees for all first-year students admitted to public tertiary institutions.

Then second component of the no-fees stress policy “is the student loan plus initiative. This is a restructured financing model that provides enhanced support for continuing students with expanded eligibility and simplified access. And as you were just informed, next year the money allocated to the student loan scheme is going to be doubled and so you will also expect a doubling of your student loan”.

He further stated that, under the Policy is the free tertiary education for persons with disability.

  • Minority calls for interdiction of Registrar of Ghana Scholarship Secretariat

Minority calls for interdiction of Registrar of Ghana Scholarship Secretariat

The Minority in Parliament says the Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Kingsley Agyemang must be interdicted with immediate effect.

In a statement, the Minority indicated that the call is based on the investigation by the Fourth Estate into the award of scholarships by the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, an agency under the Office of the President.

“The investigations, which span the period between 2019 and 2020, reveal very sordid details of the award of Government of Ghana scholarships on the basis of political patronage, influence, favouritism, among other considerations, contrary to the object of these scholarships which are supposed to be given to deserving, needy but brilliant students,” the ranking Member on Education Committee in Parliament Peter Nortsu Koteo stated.

He therefore called for the “immediate interdiction of the Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Kingsley Agyemang, pending investigations into its operations. The Special Prosecutor must order an immediate forensic audit of all scholarships awarded since January 2017.

“We call on President Akufo-Addo to act swiftly in this matter in order to protect the public purse from further abuse.”
