A Ghanaian language teacher who teaches Twi from Class One to Form Three alone says she receives just GH¢750 a month, a situation she describes as “really bad” as she struggles to meet her daily expenses.

The teacher, whose identity reminds confidential, said she receive meagre salary at the end of the month for teaching the students.

Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, she said the situation has become difficult, particularly as she is also pursuing university education alongside her teaching job.

“I’m actually a Ghanaian language teacher. I’m teaching Twi currently at where I’m working. And I’m teaching from Class 1 to Form 3, only me. And then at the end of the month, I’m only given 750 Ghana cedis,” she said.

According to her, the low income has made it difficult to meet her daily expenses, including transportation to and from school.

She explained that she has to join a car to school every morning while also dealing with accommodation expenses.

“I have to join car every morning to school. I’m renting, and besides my parents are not here. I stay alone . These things are going on,” she said.

The teacher also expressed hope that her salary would be reviewed when the school resumes, particularly after the performance of the current Form Three students she taught.

She said the students completed their studies and performed very well, which has strengthened her expectation that the school may consider improving her remuneration.

“The Form 3, that have completed, they did so well this year. They did so, well. And I’m at least hoping that maybe when school resumes, they’ll do something about my salary. Because it’s really bad,” she said.

She further spoke about the financial difficulties that come with trying to survive on such a low income, saying people sometimes have to look for alternative means of meeting their needs.

The teacher also raised concerns about the cost of transportation, particularly the amount she spends commuting to and from work.

She said the daily transportation expenses add to the financial pressure she already faces as a teacher earning GH¢750 a month.

Her testimony highlights the personal financial challenges she says she faces while combining teaching with her university education.
