Traders operating illegally on pavements and streets within Accra’s Central Business District will face a GH₵2,000 fine, according to a stern warning issued by Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo.
This directive follows a decongestion exercise jointly carried out on Tuesday, May 20, by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly.
The operation aimed to clear unauthorized traders from the streets as part of ongoing efforts to ease congestion, enforce city bylaws, and enhance sanitation across the capital.
During a tour of the Central Business District to monitor the operation, Linda Ocloo reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring order in the metropolis. She cautioned that any attempt to obstruct the clean-up exercise would not be tolerated and offenders would face the full rigours of the law.

In support of the initiative, AMA Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, revealed that the Assembly is also considering plans to restrict access to certain streets within the CBD on designated days. The move, he explained, is part of a broader strategy to regulate street trading in line with the government’s 24-hour economy policy.
