The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UTNMG) has appealed to the government to reconsider the current process for validating trainee allowances.
According to the Union, the exercise is rushed and unfair to students.
In a statement dated June 17, 2025, UTNMG highlighted several concerns regarding the validation instructions, including the system and the duration.
They pointed out that the regulation is troubling because it requires trainees to submit their Ghana Card details, bank account information, and Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) numbers within a tight timeframe from June 16 to June 20, 2025.
UTNMG stressed that this requirement creates significant challenges, since many students haven’t obtained their Ghana Cards, SSNIT numbers, or bank accounts yet.
They mentioned that the old system only needed E-zwich account details, so the new requirements have thrown trainees for a loop, making it a tough adjustment.
The Union also expressed concern about the 2024 batch being left out of the validation process. The UTNMG pointed out that these students have already had to deal with 15 months of unpaid allowances and are currently going through their mandatory national service while facing serious financial challenges.

The UTNMG is calling on the government to rethink all of this, extend the deadline for the validation exercise, include the 2024 batch, and revisit the January 2026 decision regarding allowance payments.
The Union is hopeful that the government will respond with empathy and urgency to these issues and lend support to trainee nurses and midwives.
