The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has cut the sod for the construction of the 38km Benchemaa-Barrier Adjoafua road in the western North Region.

The project includes the construction of a carriageway, climbing lane, drains, as well as the reconstruction of the 50m Bridge over the River Bia.

The project would to be executed by Messers Amandi investment LTD and funded by COCOBOD.

Ultimate FM’s Isaac Bediako reporting from the event said: “it was all joy in the Sefwi Elluokrom in the western north region as the Vice Dr Bawumia, Road minister Amoako Atta, Cocoa board CEO among other government officials stormed the region to improve depleted roads in the region.”

Addressing the chiefs and people at Elluokrom in the Bia West District, Dr Bawumia reiterated that the President was committed to the construction of that stretch of road to fulfil a campaign promise he made in 2016.

He said, unfortunately, there have been two different sod cuttings on the same road in 2011 and 2014 and that nothing happened but stressed that this time the road would be completed to improve upon the socio-economic development in the western North Region.

He indicated that the road was very strategic since it connected many Districts in the region as well as neighbouring Cote D ‘Ivoire.

The Vice President also revealed that the Sefwi Dwenase-Nsuansua road, Nsawora-Yawkrom road,Enchi – Ellubo, Akontombra- Dadieso and reshaping of Juabeso town roads among others were the roads to be constructed in the region.

He reiterated that next year was declared a year of roads and called on all to support the government in order to bring the needed infrastructural development to bear.

Mr Kwasi Amoako Atta, Minister of Roads and Highways said this was the first sod cutting for the construction of Cocoa roads in the country and called on residents to support the contractor to execute an excellent job.

He warned against the pilfering of materials by the workers and ask chiefs not to plead on behalf of culprits when they are caught.

Nana Kwasi Katakyei Bumankamah, Paramount chief for Sefwi- Waiwso traditional area who chaired the occasion expressed gratitude to the President for creating Western North Region and the cutting of the sod for the construction of the roads which has been a problem to them for a long time.

He was hopeful that the sod cutting would not be the same as the previous sod cuttings which did not yield positive results.

He hinted that the people of the area would “reward the government positively”, if the road is constructed.
