VIDEO: Afua Asantewaa vows to attempt Guinness World Record again

Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, the Ghanaian who attempted the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon by an individual, has announced her intention to try again despite her previous attempt being unsuccessful.

In an interview with GHOne TV, Afua Asantewaa expressed her determination, likening her pursuit to that of presidential aspirants who continue campaigning after losing elections and to the Black Stars, Ghana’s national football team, who persist in competing despite setbacks in World Cup tournaments.

“I have never in my life seen the Black Stars quit football because they did not qualify for the World Cup, they still play all the time. I have seen presidential candidates who have not won the presidential seat but still attempting. So, if I have attempted the World Record and it wasn’t successful, it does not mean that I should give up,” she stated.

Reflecting on her past effort, she noted that she completed her singing marathon at 126 hours and 52 minutes on December 29, 2023, surpassing the existing record held by Sunil Waghmare of India, who sang for 105 hours in 2012. Despite this feat, the GWR declared her attempt unsuccessful on February 22, 2024. In their announcement, GWR stated, “Unfortunately, Afua’s Guinness World Record attempt for the longest singing marathon was not successful but we hope that she will make another attempt soon.”

The GWR explained that an evidence check had already commenced before Afua requested priority service, leading to a refund of her payment. Responding to the announcement, Afua admitted that the outcome was unexpected but accepted it graciously. “The outcome of the attempt following the announcement by GWR is not what I expected, nonetheless, I have accepted it and have requested GWR to provide more details.”

Despite the setback, Afua remains positive and motivated. “We are still considering and so moving forward I believe that a lot has been learned. We have only two weeks to attempt what we did last year December so we have enough months ahead that is if we would want to go again, to probably prepare and hit it once and for all,” she said.

Afua expressed her gratitude to the Ghanaian public and various stakeholders for their unwavering support throughout her journey. “I wish to express profound gratitude to the people of Ghana and various stakeholders for your immense support throughout my Sing-a-thon journey,” she concluded.

With renewed determination, Afua Asantewaa Aduonum is set to prepare for another attempt at the world record, embodying resilience and perseverance in her quest for global recognition.
