Altercations ensued at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital between the Ranking Member of the Health Committee in Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and some members in the hospital’s management following the Member of Parliament’s intention to inspect a faulty elevator.
The Management who refused to permit the Juaboso MP from accessing the elevator had demanded an official letter covering the tour.
Mr. Akandor amidst the rift, excoriated management of the facility for failing to ensure regular maintenance.
Speaking to the media after the exchange, the MP blamed the malfunctioning of the elevator on the lack of maintenance of culture at the hospital.
“What happened to routine maintenance in this country? So you’ll wait till all your lifts are down and you say that people must not come for the healthcare they need. It’s rather unfortunate,” Mr. Akandor said.
On August 26, 2024, the Management of the Korle Bu Hospital announced the suspension of elective surgeries due to a breakdown of an elevator at the surgical block leading to widespread concern among Ghanaians.
The Ranking Member further called on the Minister of Health to address the issue “within the next 24 hours”, demanding that timelines be provided on when the elevators would be fixed.
