A tragic accident in Sonitra, near Kpetoe in the Volta Region, claimed the life of six-year-old Sarah Ahiafor on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
The young girl drowned while washing clothes at a pond used for irrigation, authorities confirmed.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said its Kpetoe team responded swiftly to a distress call at around 1:40 p.m., with Assistant Station Officer David Dzakah leading the rescue operation.
Firefighters recovered the child from the water but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
“The child was in the company of other minors who had gone to the pond without adult supervision,” the GNFS said in a statement on Monday, February 2.
The body was handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.
The Service issued a stern warning to parents and guardians, urging them to closely supervise children near open water sources. Ponds, irrigation sites, and similar water bodies can pose serious risks if accessed without responsible adult oversight.
The GNFS also extended condolences to the family and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting life and property in the region.
