The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ayawaso East, Abdul Ganiu Ibrahim, is calling for the establishment of a science-focused senior high school in Nima to expand educational opportunities for young people in the area.
In an exclusive interview with GHOne TV’s Abdul-Hanan Adam, the MCE said the absence of a senior high school in the municipality is a major concern, especially given the growing national push for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
“Get a senior high school in Ayawaso East – that’s our big, big agenda,” Mr Ibrahim said. “When you come to Ayawaso East, we don’t have any senior high school, and most of our youth who go to other schools away from Nima are not getting well equipped. So it’s my big agenda on the table.”
Mr Ibrahim explained that although land availability is often cited as a challenge in the area, the Assembly has identified a site in Kanda and is in discussions with the Municipal Education Directorate to make the plan a reality.
“As for the land issue, we are working with some of our land at Kanda which is available, and we are engaging with the Education Director on how we can collaborate and get it to the top,” he said.
The proposed school, he stressed, must be a science-based institution. “We need a science school in Ayawaso East… now technology is all about science and we need to educate our youth to learn more in science and get more education.”
He believes a science-focused institution in Nima will help equip young people with the skills needed to thrive in today’s knowledge-based economy and boost academic performance in the municipality.
