President Akufo-Addo has stated that his administration has paid the biggest coupon to bondholders under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
Addressing Parliament for the 2024 State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo commended all financial sector players and Organized Labour for their support.
“We were able to successfully exchange some two hundred and three billion Ghana cedis worth of bonds. Not only was the exchange successful, but it helped us to secure within five months the shortest possible, in the recent debt restructuring agreement with the IMF.
“My gratitude to all Financial Sector Players, Organized Labour, Firms, Regulatory Institutions and all individuals who made this pain exercise successful,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
He continued: “Mr. Speaker if you recall, the government successfully paid the coupon of 2.3 billion Ghana cedis on the new bonds on the 23rd August, 2023. At the time that was the single biggest pay out of domestic payment in recent days for Ghana.
“We then pay two billion and sixty million Ghana cedis for the last leg of the domestic debt exchange on 5th September 2023. A week ago last Tuesday on 20th February 27, 2024 the second coupon of 5.8 billion Ghana cedis was paid to domestic bondholders.”
