President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to all appointees in his administration, vowing that any official implicated in a corruption scandal will face swift and uncompromising action.
Speaking during a courtesy visit from a 17-member delegation of the Christian Council of Ghana at the Jubilee House, President Mahama emphasized his commitment to tackling corruption while in office.
“Before I became president, I had indicated that we’re going to take the fight against corruption to a whole new level and it’s not anything personal against anybody,” he said.
He criticized the tendency of governments to address corruption only after leaving office, noting the recurring cycle of post-regime investigations.
“Our problem in the fight against corruption is that it is always post-regime corruption that we fight and so when a government is in office, when scandals are taking place, they don’t deal with them and so they leave it until a new government comes,” he explained.
Mahama underscored the seriousness of his directive to ministers, using vivid imagery to stress consequences for the first person who brings scandal to his administration.
“I say the prosecutions that we are taking against the current government will be tied to the first person who brings a scandal to this government. We shall hang them on a cross and you follow our Lord Jesus Christ that you cannot resurrect again.”
He further linked accountability to public trust, insisting that curbing corruption is essential to maintaining confidence in Ghana’s democracy.
“We must deal with the corruption that has taken place and my belief is that if we want our people to continue to have faith in our democracy, then we must show that the political elite is capable of governing accountably,” he said.
