Calls are growing for the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register with Zango Institute for Development (ZID), the latest to join the fray.
The non-profit organization disclosed that it had launched an investigation into 360 zongo communities, out of which 252, representing 70% had issues with the electoral register.
In a press statement, it indicated that the irregularities included “missing of voters’ names from the register, unauthorized and illegal voter transfers to different polling stations”.
The ZID called on the Electoral Commission to take immediate action to address the infractions, warning that they could “disenfranchise thousands of voters from the Zango communities”.
Calls for an audit of this year’s voters’ register remain loud as some political parties including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and many civil society organizations have urged the EC to hand over the register to an independent body for a thorough audit.
Last week, the leadership, supporters and sympathizers of the NDC took to the streets across the country to demand an audit of the register.
The Electoral Commission, which was presented a petition at the end of the demonstration pledged to address their concerns, noting that the voters’ register was in its early stages.
Describing the proposed audit as needful, the ZID insisted that it was “in the national interest”.
