The Municipal Chief Executive for Ayawaso East, Abdul Ganiu Ibrahim, has raised concerns over a major discrepancy in the number of sanitation workers assigned to the municipality by waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
In an exclusive interview with GHOne News’ Abdul-Hanan Adam, the MCE revealed that although official records show that 104 sanitation workers were deployed to Ayawaso East, only 28 are currently working.
According to Mr Ibrahim, upon assuming office two months ago, he found no Zoomlion sweepers actively working in the area and has since relied on just 28 sanitation workers directly engaged by the Assembly.
“I spoke to my men and they brought me a list of Zoomlion employing 104 workers for the municipality. But when I assumed office, there is nobody who is working. The municipality has only 28 sweepers who we are working with,” he stated.
He also disclosed that the Assembly currently has no active contract with Zoomlion for street sweeping services.
“The only contract we have with Zoomlion is for picking up the big bins—the ‘bola’ containers. But in terms of the sweepers cleaning the street, there’s no contract with them. I haven’t seen it on my desk,” he said.
Mr Ibrahim noted that even during his transition into office, there was no handover note or official communication indicating an ongoing Zoomlion contract for sweepers in the municipality.

The revelation raises questions about transparency and accountability in waste management contracts and their execution at the local level.
