The Ghana Police Service has arrested ten suspected members of a notorious armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorising rural banks across several regions of the country.
Three other members of the gang were shot dead during a fierce exchange of gunfire with police operatives.
Announcing the breakthrough at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, September 24, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, described the operation as a major milestone in the Service’s fight against violent crime.
“This morning, we are delighted to share with you a major breakthrough the Service has made in our fight against violent crimes, specifically armed robbery,” IGP Yohuno said.
The suspects were rounded up in coordinated operations across the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti regions, with arrests taking place in communities such as Ejisu Achiaakrom, Obuasi, Buoho, Asuofua, Atonsu, and Esereso Adagya.
According to the IGP, the syndicate had been identified after police observed a consistent pattern in attacks on financial institutions, particularly rural banks.
Surveillance, intelligence gathering, and tips from the public were instrumental in tracking them down.
During the operation, police recovered a cache of weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and mobile phones believed to have been used by the criminals.
IGP Yohuno commended the Ashanti Regional Police Commander and his team for their role in the successful crackdown and also praised members of the public whose credible information helped in dismantling the gang.
“I wish to sincerely thank members of the public who volunteered credible information to the police that contributed to this breakthrough,” he said, urging continued cooperation.
The IGP assured that the police will not relent until the remaining fugitives are captured.
“We will continue to make life uncomfortable for criminal elements in our society,” he declared, adding that the Service will continue to pursue criminal elements until they are brought to justice.
